Ramadan means constant and/or intense heat, based off of it's root ramada and its form fa&alaanun. Furthermore shahru-ramaanada can also be read as shah-ru(rr)ramadaana which is the equivalent to shahrun ramadaanan, meaning roughly a month heat-wise or a summerly month. Therefore some Quranists see the fast of the month of Ramadan as a fast to be done in our local seasons of summer, being the time of intense/constant heat. In the Arabic of the last prophet's time and before it referred to both a month on a luni-solar calendar known to be consantly/intensely hot. However this calendar needed a 13th month to be accurate. The Quran outlawed the 13th month but it never confirmed the truth of using the moon to count the years. The ahillat is of 2:189 is the haleel of 5:3.
5:3 says not to eat things 'uhilla' in the name of God' Uhilla is the passive of ahalla which equals 'slaughter with a consecration' or 'to consecrate' The muhall or maa uhilla = haleel just as maa uslima = saleem only when the form 4 is causative. So haleel = what is to be consecrated. Ahillat is a valid plural of haleel based on the plurals of the form fa&eelun. The whole passage is speaking about pilgrimage, and al-ahillatu are the animals that are to be slaughtered to feed the pilgrims and the poor. And the ahillat are mawaaqeet or to be timed (and not randomly) for the people.
Additionally, lunar years are very innacurate years. See the The Proper Calendar for further clarification.
Furthermore the Pilgramage is to be done to true houses of God in our localities for 4 months and is to fall in both winter and spring. The most logical understanding and the one that cuases the least dificulty is that this period of pilgrimage is to begin at the winter equinox and last a month into spring after the occurence of the spring equinox. 120 sunrise to sunrise days total.
So here are the dates for the fast for Ramadan:
You must only fast from food, water and sexual activity during the daylight hours for 30 days. If it would be very, very hard for you and you would suffer through it then you can feed someone in need or in a bad situation and deserving of pity for each day you miss.
